Antique Musical Instruments/Buescher Alto Sax

Question

Me and My Alto
Hey there. I'm a 13 year old and I've been playing sax for 4 1/2 years now. I've recently inherited a Buescher Alto Sax (serial number 238407, True-Tone) from my grandfather. He played in on cruise ships in the '30s (I think.) Also he played with Les Brown. I was wondering if you knew any more information about this saxophone. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Brady,

I don't usually answer questions on saxes, but I will tell you a bit about your sax.  Your horn dates to 1914.  Many consider the Buescher saxes from the late 1920's to the 1950s to be among the best saxes ever made.  Most early saxes had intonation problems, but the early Bueschers did have good intonation.  Your sax was designed to be a professional horn, and although it is a bit before the heyday of the Buescher reputation, it should still be a great horn to play.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
