Question

Instrument.jpg
My mother-in-law found this instrument in an attic quite some time ago in a motel they purchased in Wyoming.  She gave it to my daughter this weekend.  Can you tell me what it is?  Is this something worth restoring (and who do you recommend if yes) or just for show.  Getzen Deluxe Elkhorn WI on the instrument. Thanks.

Answer
It is a soprano trombone.  It is a horn that many people would like to have (me too).  It is more in the fun to play category than collect to display.

I would think that any competent repair service should be able to put it in good playing condition.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
