Question
I own a sousaphone-shaped baritone horn by HB Jay. I've owned since 1946. My father bought it  for me from a musician friend. They were active in the thirties. Can you give me any info on this horn? I've heard that there were only a few made. Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Yep, they are pretty unusual.  Jay manufactured brass instruments in Chicago from 1910 to 1946. No serial number list exists for the company.  Your horn was a resurgence of an idea that occurred in the 1870s.  Only at that time the sousaphone hadn't been invented, but the idea of having a horn that wrapped around they body was called a helicon, and they made them in alto, tenor, baritone and bass sizes.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
