Question
QUESTION: I have a superb reconditioned (like new or better) Olds cornet with serial no. 7892.  I was told it might be a very early one.  Gee--is it actually worth more than a simple musical instrument, e.g., extra value due to age?

Will you respond directly by email?  Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: That serial number would date to the early 1930's.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Holy cow.  And this is a superbly (surely re-done) instrument.  Now I've listed it on eBay for $200.  Am I being too pessimistic for apparently almost a historical piece?  Or does reconditioning, as with antiques, really lower value?

How I wish I had playing talent.  I'd keep my Olds "Recording" (also up for sale, ser. no 330771) and this cornet, and you'd hear about me in the music world.  Alas.

Answer
Not to worry, the horn will rise to a fair market value on eBay.

reconditioning effect(s) on value can vary depending the horn (rarity, desirability based on what factor, condition, the nature of the reconditioning, etc.) If it is desired by a museum, then reconditioning will probably hurt its value, if it is going to a playing collector, then it likely will improve its value.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
