Question
QUESTION: Mr Scott

I have a cg conn cornet I believe is a victor. I am trying to find some info on this particular cornet such as what does the model 80A and the serial number 360132 tell me and how do I read the numbers. Any other info on this silver cornet or places that would have the info would be appreciated.
thanks

Ken

ANSWER: Conn made 3 versions of 80A's.  The serial number says it was made in 1946 (now don't call it an antique, cause I was made the same year!)

But only one of them was being made in 1946, it was the #2½ Bore Bb & A Victor.

Other sites would include http://www.xs4all.nl/~cderksen/ConnCornet.html and http://www.horn-u-copia.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=Conn

QUESTION: Please address my question about reading the model & serial number. Every thing i have seen sorta skips over the number of my cornet Maybe I are an antique being made in the thirties!!!!!!

thanks for your response.

Ken

Answer
Well, I'm not sure what you are asking.  The serial number is a number that is assigned as the horn is being made.  It represents a general date of manufacture, nothing more,  they were assigned as groups of instruments came through the factory so, you might see several of the same type of instrument with consecutive numbers and then they will switch to another instrument.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
