Question
My husband has a trombone engraved The Olds Made by F.E. Olds & Son Los Angeles, Calif. It has an inslide tuning adjustment. The inner slide is not round. The balance weight is a bear playing a trombone and the serial number on the slide is 11449. What can you tell us about this instrument?

Answer
I think the computer ate my answer,  so I'll try it again.

Your horn dates to 1938.  The design of the slide was intended to reduce the friction on the slide.

The model could be one of several.  You may want to look at my Olds model list at:  http://www.horn-u-copia.net/olds-trombone.html  Or, check out the Olds Trombone discussion on www.horn-u-copia.net

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
