Antique Musical Instruments/trombone

Question
I found a great trombone yesterday. I know nothing about it. I have found the name HOLTON on the silver mouth piece. It has a emblem on it that has a shape something like a black triangle. I guess this is the emblem for HOLTON. I think it is chrome. It has a light greenish blue tarnish. Can I clean it with a chrome polish? Is there anyway of knowing the age of this piece?

Answer
The name on the mouthpiece is not a good indication of the brand of the horn. If it was a Holton, it would say so on the bell. It is probably not chrome.  It might be silverplated, or german silver (which is a form of brass).  You might want to try a metal polish like Blue Magic to clean it.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
