Question
Good Day:

I have a French Horn with the following marking:

Jul. Heinr. ZIMMERMANN
Leipzig Berlin
Markneukirchen
Eigenis Fabrikat
MARKE
(image of man with ax and saw)
No. 2544
Made in Germany

Its design is like the Schmidt French Horns (F & Bb with three rotary valves and one piston valve).  Any information will be appreciated

Answer
In 1875, Zimmerman established his business first in St. Petersburg.  He moved his headquarters to Leipzig in 1886.  Opened a branch in Berlin n 1919 and the factory in Markneukirchen was opened at about the same time.

He started as an instrument dealer but then became a maker.

The firm ended in about 1930.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
