Question
i have a baby tuba (from pictures as far as i can tell) m j h kessel is stamped on it .there is some other engraving too.how do i clean it properly ,what is the history and should i try to sell it or just scrap it for brass?thank you for your answer, eric

Answer
How baby?  A small tuba could be an euphonium, a baritone, a tenor horn, or an alto horn.

Don't scrap it.

Cleaning it depends on what it is made of, and finished.  Why don't you email me at Kenton@Punxypa.com and we can get into more of that detail.

Matthias Kessels established his business in 1880 in Tilburg. In 1908, the name changed to NB Koninklijke Nederlandsche Fabriek van Muziekinstrumenten NV Konefa (Konefa).  In 1914, it was reestablished under his own name.  After his death in 1932, he was succeeded by his son as Nationale Fabriek van Muziekinstrumeten.  The company was dissolved in 1940.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
