Antique Musical Instruments/Antique Tuba Info Please

Question
Hello Kenton,
I have a very old silver-plated Antoine Courtois & Mille Contre Basse - E flat.  It has many inscriptions with dates on the bell that describe all of the awards for this instrument.  I've been told that the most recent date is likely it's production date.  This date is 1878.  I'm not a player of wind instruments, but this tuba appears to be in remarkably good, full-working condition.  Can you tell me anything more about this beautiful instrument?  Is it at all rare, of value, etc.  I've found some info about Courtois online, but have never been able to find anything similar for sale, sold on e-bay, etc.  I know you say you cannot provide an appraissal - would you have any suggestions for obtaining one? Any help or direction would be most appreciated.  Thank you in adavance,
George

Answer
More accurately, the horn will be no older than the most recent date.  It can be newer. It was mostly likely built between 1878-1889.

You probably want to get a tuba player to try it out with a tuner.  One of the things that would affect value is whether it is high pitch or low pitch (modern pitch). If it plays at an A at 440, that is obviously a good thing.  Being a high pitched horn doesn't help its value.    Though, high pitched horns can be converted to low pitch.

If your intention is to sell it anyway, if you describe it accurately and provide good pictures, eBay will sell it for a fair price.  There is no real point in paying someone to appraise it.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
