bugle
Hello Mr Scott.I own a brass &copper bugle stamped"Mayers &Harrison, makers England. It measures 11" mouth to bell,5.5" top to bottom, and the bell is 4" in diameter.I dont play so I dont know exactly what type it is or it,s rough age.Hope you can enlighten me.

Answer
I don't follow bugles closely, and I do know that a ton of knock off bugles in this basic style have been made in India.  So, I'd be concerned about its legitimacy, but that being said Mayers & Harrison were "makers and uniform contractors" starting in 1923.  They were out of business in 1934, but resumed in 1945.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
