Question
I have a Gebr. Alexander Mainz French Horn I played in high school and college.  I began playing this instrument in 1953 so it is at least 55 years old.  How can I find out more about this instrument?  I have checked e-Bay, but only find this make of French Horn which is about 4 years old.

Answer
The Alexander family started in the instrument making business in 1802, though initially they were primarily woodwind makers.  In 1862 they consulted with Richard Wagner  to develop the Wagner tuba.  Their factory was bombed in 1944, but resumed production in 1945.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
