Question
I have a U.S. calvary horn it is larger than a cornet and smaller than a trumpet. It is silver and has U.S. carved into the bell with a registration number on it. Can you tell me anything about this horn? The reg. # is 405710
Thanks
glenna

Answer
Well, technically, a  cornet and a trumpet are the same length, they are just wrapped differently.  But I think you mean that your bugle is longer than a cornet.

Bugles are typically pitched in G and can tune down to F.  Which means that they are actually shorter than either the trumpet or the cornet.  You can compare it to number of other bugles at:  http://www.horn-u-copia.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1131119213

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
