Question
Just a note to ask a couple of questions concerning a horn I have. It is a lefthanded, piston activated, FRENCH HORN,(not a Mellophone), made by YORK around 1942(I believe), serial # 128524.
Does it have a special name??
Is it rare??
If you like, I will send you some pictures of it.
All the best,  Torben

Answer
Yes, I know the horn, and I agree 1942.  Other makers also tried making French horns with piston valves, though generally earlier than this one.  I don't think they ever really caught on.  By this time, York had been sold to Carl Fischer, so their previous product line was changing.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
