Question
QUESTION: I have received, as a gift, a JW Perry baritone...this is not a marching instrument.  Not in the best of condition, but still attractive.  I am having a hard time finding info on this.  It is missing the mouth piece...will I be able to find one?  The instrument is stamped: J.W. Perry  STANDARD  Philadelphia  underneath that is 29066.  Thank you for any infomation on this brass baritone.  Oh, it has 3 valves.

ANSWER: I suspect that it is actually a J. W. Pepper.

QUESTION: Thank you ...do you think I'll be able to get a mouth piece for this baritone?  If so, what are the best resourses for finding one?  Thank you again.

Answer
It was probably made around the turn of the century, and Pepper obtained his horns from a variety of sources.  It is not too unlikely that a modern mouthpiece would fit the horn, which you could get at any music store.  However, it would probably play better with a vintage mouthpiece, and they take a bit of searching.  Music store might have one, or eBay is also a possibility.  However, there is also the possibility that it uses an old style (small) shank mouthpiece.  And, they require even more searching to find, because they are less common.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
