Antique Musical Instruments/Old Conn Cornet

Question

Conn Cornet Bell and e
I have purchased a Cornet for my Granddaughter to use for music class.  I was told it is a Conn.  It is silver with brass color inside the bell.  It has the Serial number 85446 on the 2nd valve.  It has scroll work on the top of the bell, flowery with the words "COLE" "MADE IN ELKHART" and "AMERICAN"  It plays well and we are happy with it for what it is used for.  Just wondering what the "COLE" means and when it might have been made.
Thanks
Bruce

Answer
I fear you may have mis-understood my answer to your email, I didn't mean to say that your horn was a Conn, but rather meant to ask you whether it could have said Conn rather than Cole.   But from the picture you sent, it does appear to say Cole.  Cole is not a maker's name.  So, it must be the tradename of a dealer.  There are several makers in Elkhart - including Conn.  So, it may have been made there, but it would be difficult to say which one.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
