Question
I bought a old helicon with 4 rotary valves marked Eduard Riedl senior Graslitz, serial number 124. Could you indicate how old it is? And has there also been a Eduard Riedl junior making brass-instruments?

Answer
Franz Xaver Hüller, born 12/29/1856, in Pechbach, founded his factory in Graslitz in 1880.  The company name was F.X. Hüller until 1920.  Then his sons in law : Anton Riedl and Ernst Modl became partners.  The name was changed to F.X. Hüller & Co.  !

Anton Riedl (ARIGRA= AntonRIedlGRAslitz) was born in 1861 and established his own company in in 1885.  Anton Riedl was a an accomplished machine, bell and instrument maker.  A speciality of his were octagonal trumpet bells.  He closed his own company and building in 1936.

After WWII, Ernst Modl re-opened  F.X. Hüller the company in Neustadt /Aisch and change the name to EMO (from his name Ernst MOdl).  This company was closed after his death in 1972.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
