Antique Musical Instruments/antique trombone

Question
For Christmas I was given an antique trombone made by a brand named Champion, I was wondering if it was possible to discern when it was made.

Answer
There was more than one company that used Champion as a tradename, but the most common was Lyon and Healy's Champion Silver Piston.

Lyon and Healy were in business in Chicago from 1864-1940.  They were an outlet for Ditson instruments. They had a complex network of suppliers and sub-contractors.  They actually manufactured instruments from 1923-1930.  After that, they just stenciled horns.

The experienced a number of fires, in which they lost their records from which their suppliers and possibly their dating of their instruments could have been extracted.  It also seems that they probably used more than one serial number series.

The Champion name seemed to be used in the late 1800s - early 1900s.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
