About Jim Garber
Expertise

PLEASE NOTE: I will not be able to answer any questions about antique keyboards, accordions, concertinas, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

I can answer most questions on fretted instruments, my main area of expertise is in vintage mandolins, guitars and ukuleles. I also know some things about old banjos as well.

I have decided to no longer evaluate instruments -- it is very difficult without the instrument in hand. For guitars and some other American fretted instruments, I recommend the Vintage Guitar Price guide. Also, be aware that most insurance companies want written appraisals so my valuation would not work anyway.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: it is near-impossible to accurately appraise a violin or bow remotely. If you truly want to find out what you have, you will likely need to take it to a reputable local dealer. Many of these folks will at least give you a verbal assessment of what you have after an inspection in hand and, if it is indeed worth something, can write you up a formal appraisal, usually for a fee.

If you have any questions about zithers please check the following sites:
http://www.fretlesszithers.com/ or
http://www.fretlesszithers.net/
Between the two of them, they have it all covered for any zither-like instrument.

Antique Musical Instruments - 1933 Martin D-35

Expert: Jim Garber - 10/15/2009

Question
Jim,
My fiance had recieved a 1933 martin d35 from her grandmother and i was wondering more about it. She said it was made before the factory burned down and i was wondering if you could shed some more light on the case. If it is true could you estimate its worth as a local guitar shop could not and did not know much about it. The guitar itself is in good condition except for a few scratches on the back.

Answer
Hi Devane:
First of all, D-35s were made starting in 1965, so either it is not a D-35 or else the date is wrong. Do you have a serial number? Martin serial numbers make it quite easy to date it.

If it is a D-45 and is from 1933 then you may have a real treasure there.

I would suggest contacting first the Martin factory. I am sure they could ID it for you. If you want an appraisal I would contact one of the following reputable dealers in vintage instruments (no particular order): retrofret.com, elderly.com. gruhn.com. bernunzio.com, mandolinbrothers.com

if you want to appraise it for insurance purposes, you would need an official appraisal anyway. If you want to sell it any of those folks would be glad to assist you.

Best
Jim
