Question
MY PREVIOUS QUESTION REFERED TO A BAND STYLE HORN (BARITONE). UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, I AM WONDERING IF IT IS A EUPHONIUM. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES. THE BELL FACES STRAIGHT UP ON THIS ONE. IT APPEARS TO BE VERY OLD. PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU.

Answer
There is no clear definition of what is a baritone and what is an euphonium.  Additionally, US terminology is different than British terminology.  The Brits call a horn a baritone that we call a tenor horn.  My working definition is that the euphonium has more conical tubing in it than does an euphonium. And, one indicator is where the tuning slide is.  If it is before the valves (mouthpiece side) then it is a baritone.  If it is after the valves, it is an euphonium.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
