Question
I have had my Dads trumpet since his death 20 years ago. I cleaned it up tonight and thought it time to restore it. It s Pat is Oct 29.07 Serial 236050 LP A 10-22 Truetone registered trademark. It appears to be silver plated with brass markings of a paisley leaf motif? brass on the inside of the horn and mother of pearl on the Keys? I do not play an instrument so I am not sure what everything is called. Can you tell me anything about this and what should I do as far as bringing it back to life? I have the case which is black leather and a green felt interior. Thank you so very much and a very happy holiday to you and yours!

Answer
It dates to 1928, the model is 10-22 and it is pitched to play with modern instruments.  It was designed for the professional market.   It is likely that the 'brass' on the silver, unless it is simply worn off, is probably gold wash.  You can polish it with good silver polish, but be careful with the gold, as it is very thin, and will come off relatively easily.  Beyond that, you should probably let a repair service do the work.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
