Question
My daughter was given  this cornet and case the only marking we can see is the name Henri Gautier engraved on it, and the number 28179.   Can you tell us how old it is?  We no nothing about it.  It is very old looking.  Is there a book you could suggest that we could get more information.

Answer
Gautier is a tradename used by Lyon and Healy for imported instruments.

Lyon and Healy was established in Chicago as an outlet for Ditson instruments, and eventually dominated retail mail order instrument sales in the US.

Lyon and Healy were in business in Chicago from 1864-1940. They had a complex network of suppliers and sub-contractors. The records of which were destroyed in a series of fires.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
