Question
I am considering the purchase of an old Martin Band Instrument Co. (Elkhart, IN) 3-valve baritone for my son. It has a serial number of 14318, was silver plated, came with a mouthpiece labeled J.H. Gham Maker, size G. Can you give me some idea of its age and history? (horn and mouthpiece) Thanks.

Answer
Can't help with the mouthpiece, but the horn dates to approximately 1917.

There is some debate on when the company actually began, but it appears that the main configuration of the company started in 1910.

Martin was later sold to the Wurlitzer Company (no earlier than 1964) and then purchased by Leblanc and moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 1971.

They made quality, well respected instruments.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
