Question
Hi there, I have my G G Grandfathers cornet that I want to restore for my son to play, but would like to know more about it. Can't find it anywhere on net...wondering if you could help. On bell it has picture of dove holding what looks like a bugle a nice flower arrangment and Boosey & Hawkes Makers 295 Regent st, london W1 139220. and on valves has 109426 with 99, 98 and 97 on valves Patent 193729. I don't want to sell this instrument because of it's family value, but would love to know year and anything else maybe of interest. Thank you, Best Regards. Clayton

Answer
This horn dates back to the early 1930s.  It should be a good horn for your son, assuming it is in good playing condition.  About the only thing it may lack is a shiny modern look, which for some students is an important thing.  It should play at least as well as the average modern instrument.

Boosey and Co merged with Hawkes and Son in 1930, blending the resources of two significant British makers.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
