Question

Conn Cornet
Hello Kenton,

I have acquired what I believe to be a Conn Cornet? with a patent date of June 15, 1886. It came with a bunch of additional plumbing, a mouthpiece extension tube and two separate mouthpieces. It has a capital letter "o" to the second power like "o2" stamped into the #2 valve body. The question: What does the o2 stand for? and why does it have all the extra plumbing? I have sent a picture for your review. Thanks in advance!!!

Answer
The patent is for the Wonder model valve design and the bits and tubing are to switch it from high and low pitch and from the keys of Bb and A.  I don't know about the o2, though they usually have markings on the 2nd valve like #1 1/2, #2, or #2 1/2 to indicate the bore size.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
