Antique Musical Instruments/King Sousaphone

Question

King Sousaphone in cas
I discovered your web site while doing some research on an old King silver Sousaphone I own in an attempt to find out what it is worth.  It's been stored away for many years and it looks like it could use some tender care and a good polishing.  The serial number is 355677.  It has a 26" bell.  It is in good working condition, plays well, and has a nice rich tone.  The mouthpiece is labeled "King 26" if my eyes serve me well.

What can you tell me about my treasure?  Can you give me an approximate value?

Thank you very much.

Answer
Carl,

It dates to the late 1050s.  It is probably the model 1250.  I also have one of these.  They are great playing sousas.  They are not as big and ponderous as some of other brands, but have a wonderful command of the register.

I don't do evaluations on this site, but I might suggest that you may want to consider this one a keeper anyway.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
