Question
my daughter was given this clarinet is it by cavalier in elkhart, ind USA.  it has a number on the back =37811.  it is silver or type of metal and seems to be in working order.  these are the only marks on this instrument except for the name of the school that used it, Brookside.  if you could give us some idea about the instrument we would appreciate it.  my daughter wants to sell it.
thanks

Answer
Metal clarinets were kind of an experiment in the early-mid 1900s.  A few were well made, but most were aimed for the student market.  They never were very well accepted.

Cavalier is a student line of a Student line (Pan American) of the Conn Company.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
