Antique Musical Instruments/CGConn LTD Elkhart IND Cornet

Question
I do have a very old brass cornet that was told was built in the 1914 during the
USA civil war. It needs some cleaning and never been used for years, I would
say over 30 years. Patent Number 380939. Can you please let me know what it
worth?
Thanks,

Answer
Couple of problems here.

1) Conn wasn't yet in business during the Civil War
2) The Civil War had been over about 50 years in 1914
3) I don't see that patent number in the Conn list of patents.
4) As stated in the introduction, I don't do evaluations on this site.
5) Labeling horns with LTD didn't start until 1915.

If the 380xxx is actually a serial number, then the horn dates to 1948.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
