Antique Musical Instruments/Euphonium / Alto Horn

Question

Horn
Dear Sir - Thank you very much for your time. I recently purchased what I think is either a euphonium or an alto horn (I will attach an image). The horn bell is marked as follows : a small mark indicating Paris 1867 then below it indicates "Excelsior" followed by "A. Lecomte & Cie, Paris". However under that it says Lehnert Phila. Is this a horn made in France? ( ie - Lacomte Paris ) or a horn made in Philadelphia by Lehnert? Also, could you please assist in identifying if it is in fact a euphonium or a alto horn?

Some measurements :
Overall length is approximately 22inches.
Bell diameter is 7 1/2 inches.

Thank you sincerely.
Pam Goodwin

Answer
Pictures can sometimes be deceiving, but your horn appears to be an alto horn.

Lecomte & Cie made instruments that were mostly for export.  And, a number of US companies handled them, including: DC Hall, Peter Grossman, Nordheimer, and Lyon & Healy.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
