Antique Musical Instruments/French Horn

Question
Dear Mr. Scot,

I recently acquired an old french horn which has the inscription "Serenader, USA" and "Made in Italy" on it. The silver plating is a bit rough but still looks all-right, the sounds is exceptionally good. Could you tell me more about this instrument since I can't find anything about this on the internet.

Many Thanks!!

Answer
It is suspected that the Serenaders were instruments made in Italy, and imported by Buegeleisen & Jacobson in New York.

B&J purchased instruments from more than one maker, so, it might be worth while comparing it with Italian makers to see if they were the same/similar.

might be a good place to start.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
