Antique Musical Instruments/Holton 1912 mellophone

Question
I have a Chicago mellophone as you have described to another user of this forum.  I am looking to sell this as well as other antique instruments.  In your experience, what are the best selling venues?  Is Ebay the best option or are you aware of buyers of antique instruments that I could contact directly?

Answer
Well there are special circumstances that may be reasons to approach an appraiser, but for most instruments, if the intention is to sell them, then eBay will get you the widest view of potential buyers.  Collectors tend to scour the eBay ads and there is little that they would be interested in that gets past them.  To get a fair price you want lots of potential buyers competing with each other to purchase it.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
