Antique Musical Instruments/Holton cornet mouth pieces

Question
I am new at brass playing, stringed instrument player and saxophone for a while. I just acquired a Holton Collegiate brass Cornet serial #839044. It came with a Vincent Bach 10-1/2 C mouthpiece. Is that a mouth piece for a young person and do I need to use a 3C to maybe a 5C, I am having trouble maintaining a constant note. I am not sure what number would be right for an older beginner with brass instruments. I know I have to develop a lip for brass, I just do not know what # mouth piece is the best in my case.
Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Answer
The 10C may be a bit small but the 3C would probably be too large.  The 7C is a typical starter mouthpiece.  But having said that, I don't think that the mouthpiece is probably at issue.  It may be embouchure, but, it might also be the condition of the instrument.  Out of align valves or air leaks will cause difficulty in producing a good clear constant note.

I think I'd recommend first having the horn checked, and if ok, then just more practice.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
