Question I have a soprano trombone (slide trumpet or slide cornet) that I cannot find much information on. The company engraved on the bell is “American Professional.” I have looked everywhere on the horn but can’t find a serial#. I found that the company “Lyon and Healy” used “American Professional” as one of their trade names for imported instruments but that is all I know. Apparently there was a fire at the company a long time ago and records were lost. I got the horn from a friend whose father bought it between 1913-1920. I know that is not an official date but it is all I have. I found a picture of a Buescher slide cornet from the 40’s and it is very similar. The water key placement and case construction are different although the interior of the case is green like the 1940 horn. Do have any information on what this horn might be? Thanks for your help.
Answer Soprano Trombone. Slide trumpets were a different design. I've not seen an example of a American Professional Soprano Trombone, but Lyon and Healy stenciled and/or imported most of the instruments they sold, so you might find a 'family resemblence' by looking at those from other makers.
Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments.
I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments.
1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site.
2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
