Antique Musical Instruments/Louis Dubois horn

Question
Hi Kenton, My father has this really old horn. The horn has "Louis Dubois" engraved on it. It also has a pat. date of 1875 on it as well. The horn appears to be in its original wooden case with purple lining. While I am unfamiliar with horns; there are two circular pieces that are present as well. The moutpiece is included, and the horn still plays and appears to be in fair condition. Can you give me any information reagarding this instrument? Although I know you do not like to give evaluations, could you recommend a site that would? Thanks, Kristie

Answer
The Louis DuBois instruments I have seen, do appear to be from the 4th quarter of the 18th century.  But, the references have no listing for Louis.  There is a Raymond in Paris (1922-1925) but that is too late, an E. DuBois in Bruxelles who also had a branch named for M.J. Dubois in Charleroi but they are in the wrong location.

Here a couple of pictures.

As far as value, if you are planning on selling it, simply providing a good description and good pictures on eBay will get you a fair price.  For just an evaluation, you may want to try:  http://www.vintage-instruments.com

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
