Question
QUESTION: I WAS GIVEN AN F.E.OLDS SUPER RECORDER TRUMPET FOR MY 14TH BIRTHDAY(63 YEARS-AGO).I KNOW IT WAS MADE IN LOS ANGELES, CA. IT HAS THE NUMBER 27937 ON THE MIDDLE VALVE. CAN YOU GIVE ME ANY IDEA WHERE I MIGHT FIND MORE INFORMATION AND AN APPROXIMATE VALUE? I'M NOT TO SURE I'LL FIND ANY OF THESE ON EBAY.
THANKS

ANSWER: I've seen the Super Recording Model on Olds Lists from the 1940s, and catalogs from the period, but I haven't seen any actual pictures of one.  If you would be interested in sharing pictures of it, I'd like to see it.  You could send pictures to Kenton@PunxyPa.com.

Here is a page from a 1941 Olds Catalog that shows the instrument and how Olds described it:  http://rouses.net/trumpet/olds41/srectrum.htm

It was apparently a new instrument when it was given to you.  We have more information on the Olds product line and history on www.horn-u-copia.net.

QUESTION: WILL SEND PICTURES ON TUES. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE I COULD COME UP WITH A CLUE AS TO VALUE?

Answer
I guess that depends on whether you are interested in selling it or whether you are just wanting to establish its value.  If selling it, as long as you provide good pictures, and an accurate description, it will naturally rise to a fair price on eBay.  Otherwise, you may want to check:  http://www.vintage-instruments.com

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
