Question
I recently purchased a baritone by the Boston musical instrument manuf'y. Its serial number is 11698. It has the crooks to be an F, E and E flat instrument. This horn plays perfectly, but I would like to replace the corks used on the top of the valves. Do you know of a source to purchase these and are you able to provide any other cool information. thank you. -tim

Answer
I believe that you are describing an alto horn dating to 1892.

Unfortunately, there are no off the shelf replacement corks for these venerable old instruments.  They need to be hand cut to size, with the right tools, they aren't too difficult to make.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
