Question
I was given what I assume to be a Holton euphonium. It has 3 valves together and a 4th valve at an angle below the other 3. there is a number on valve 2 which is 15887 and a number on the 4th which is 17819. Given the numbers and description of the valve lay out is it possible to figure out approximately when the instrument was made?

Answer
I presume that you are assuming it to be an euphonium, not that you are assuming it to be a Holton.

Does your horn look something like this?  http://www.horn-u-copia.net/instruments/Holton/Holton-Euph-23719.jpg

With that low of a serial number, it should say Chicago on it as it should date to around 1911.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
