Antique Musical Instruments/trombone Gift
Expert: Kenton Scott - 5/4/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Kenton,
I am pursuing a gift for a young (13) but seriously dedicated trombone player. Since I know nothing of the subject I would appreciate your advice.
I thought that perhaps an antique trombone, once played by a famous trombone player would be just right. I would appreciate your thoughts and guidance to a gift. Thanks, Jim fox
ANSWER: Well, of course there are many kind of kids (as there are adults). Most - kids and adults - are more interested in the new and shiny. So, unless you know that this young person is into history, I suspect that an old trombone is not going to be too impressive.
Old trombones, unlike valved instruments, have a couple of additional liabilities. 1) many of them were designed differently than modern trombones and play with a more penetrating sound, and don't blend well with modern instruments. 2) Trombones are more delicate instruments, and are prone to having more adjustment problems.
Lastly, you will likely find that horns played by the famous will add extra expense.
Having no idea what you budget is, but you may want to consider accessorizing his present horn. A trombone stand, various mutes (straight, cup, harmon, etc.)

QUESTION: Kenton,
Sorry for the follow-up.
Would a serious trombone player regard highly a gift of a trombone that was played by a famous musician? And if so where would I find such a prize. Thanks, Jim fox
AnswerSerious players with a bent for history, or a special reverence for a particular player might. Others might not.
You occasionally such instruments show up on eBay, those some also make questionable claims. And, Dillon Music also comes to mind.
