Antique Musical Instruments/Cornet

Question
I just purchased a cornet from a friend, and I am trying to figure out how old it is.  It is a lovely instrument, a Ray Lammers Cincinnati, OH, and the serial number is 23983.  Is there a way to trace how old it is/the year it was made?
Thanks!
-Melanie

Answer
Not really.  It is rumored that Ray Lammers used King instruments as his stencils.  Here is one of very similar age (SN  23978 ):     http://www.horn-u-copia.net/instruments/misc/Lammers-cornet.jpg  If it was a King serial number, it would date to 1905-10.  But, Lammers could have just as easily had his own serial number sequence.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
