Question
"The Martin" - Elkhorn, Indiana BBb Sousaphone, Serial Number 185248 - Silver Satin Finish w/bright lacquered bell. Obtained in 1964 from WWII Air Force surplus. Still in good condition.  I understand that "Martin" used more copper in their brass owing to a better sound.  Weight 54 lbs.  What can you tell me about this horn, when was it made, relative quality of the instrument ?  Also, do you know where I can find tuning bits for this instrument ?

Answer
It is a comparatively new one, 1953.  In the mid-1950s, the quality of the Martin began to decline.  The chemistry involved in making brass instruments, seems to be alchemy as much as science!  It actually seems as though poor quality of brass actually makes better brass instruments.  I've not hear the notion that Martin used is higher copper content in their sousaphones, but I question it.

Most any repair service should be able to provide you with bits.  Conn, King, Jupiter, Olds, and Yamaha are generally available.  If none of these work with your gooseneck, or if you don't have a gooseneck, then you are probably going to have to replace the receiver, gooseneck and bits with one of the above models.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
