Antique Musical Instruments - history-value?

Expert: Kenton Scott - 6/28/2009

Question
I have a coronet made by Olds Superstar of Fullerton Ca. serial # 912157. I would like to find out some more about this instrument. Thank you for your time.

Answer
made 1974-6

Ambassador

Super
Recording
Opera

The Ambassador was a student horn and the others were all considered "professional". The cost differential between the pro models wasn't so much an issue of quality and/or workmanship but materials and size (at least as far as trombones were concerned). More nickel silver translated into a high price, as did a larger bore.

In later years, Olds added the SuperStar (which I'd class as a step-up horn) and the Custom (which became their highest-priced model). Prior to WWII, Olds had a bunch of other models (Standard, Radio, Military, etc.) that were all pro horns.
