About Jim Garber
Expertise

PLEASE NOTE: I will not be able to answer any questions about antique keyboards, accordions, concertinas, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

I can answer most questions on fretted instruments, my main area of expertise is in vintage mandolins, guitars and ukuleles. I also know some things about old banjos as well.

I have decided to no longer evaluate instruments -- it is very difficult without the instrument in hand. For guitars and some other American fretted instruments, I recommend the Vintage Guitar Price guide. Also, be aware that most insurance companies want written appraisals so my valuation would not work anyway.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: it is near-impossible to accurately appraise a violin or bow remotely. If you truly want to find out what you have, you will likely need to take it to a reputable local dealer. Many of these folks will at least give you a verbal assessment of what you have after an inspection in hand and, if it is indeed worth something, can write you up a formal appraisal, usually for a fee.

If you have any questions about zithers please check the following sites:
http://www.fretlesszithers.com/ or
http://www.fretlesszithers.net/
Between the two of them, they have it all covered for any zither-like instrument.

Antique Musical Instruments - 12 string mandolin

Question
Hi Jim
Just looked at Richards question about his 'Oscar Schmidt' mandolin. I have one almost exactly the same with only minor differences. What makes anyone think that it is an Oscar Schmidt? What are the signs to look for. There is no 'OS' anywhere. OS mandolins, I believe had 13 rosewood ribs - is that the case for all? Could it be a Lakeside (Lyon and Healey) with white inlay between the ribs? - they had 18 mahogony ribs..... Mine has white inlay and 15 ribs but is the same manufacturer as Richards. It would be nice to tie it down to one maker - ok not worth a lot but we collectors just love the instrument and its history. When has value ever come into collecting instruments ha ha. Please help - by the way the measurements are as a standard neopolitan instrument even the neck is no wider! Interestingly, the bridge is fixed.
best wishes
Graham

Answer
Hi Graham:
There is an OS monogram on the pickguard of Richard's, at least the thread I found:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Antique-Musical-Instruments-2370/2009/3/12-String-Man...

A good 80%-90% of American 12 string bowlbacks I have seen turn out to be Oscar Schmidts. Yes, Lyon & Healy did sell 12 strings as well as other makers.

I doubt that every OS mandolin has the same number of ribs -- they did make a range of models and 8 strings as well as 12. They were a big company cranking out many mandolins, guitars, autoharps, zithers, etc. The bridge should not be fixed tho some past owners did glue them for fear of not placing them right when removing strings.

Post a pic of yours.

Jim
