Antique Musical Instruments/Frank Holton Sousaphone

Question
I have a BB flat Frank Holton silver Sousaphone se# 122482 made in 1937.  Has a 27 inch bell with gold plating.  It has a different kind of valve section.  All the ports come out of the back of the casings, and the valves don't have holes but have like 2 half moons cut out in the valves.  The action is short on the valves like a conn short action valve.  Also on the number 2 valve casing is stamped; patient no. 457623 under the patient number is patient applied for.  It's in excellent condition.  Could you tell me any additional information about this instrument.  Thank you for your help regarding this instrument.  Jerry

Answer
Jerry,

I have heard either of that model of horn before OR I have heard about yours before!

But it appears to me that that patent number is for a Flood Gate.  (which doesn't sound like something you would find on a sousaphone!

I would like to see pictures.  Could you send pictures to Kenton@punxypa.com?

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
