About Jim Garber
Expertise

PLEASE NOTE: I will not be able to answer any questions about antique keyboards, accordions, concertinas, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

I can answer most questions on fretted instruments, my main area of expertise is in vintage mandolins, guitars and ukuleles. I also know some things about old banjos as well.

I have decided to no longer evaluate instruments -- it is very difficult without the instrument in hand. For guitars and some other American fretted instruments, I recommend the Vintage Guitar Price guide. Also, be aware that most insurance companies want written appraisals so my valuation would not work anyway.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: it is near-impossible to accurately appraise a violin or bow remotely. If you truly want to find out what you have, you will likely need to take it to a reputable local dealer. Many of these folks will at least give you a verbal assessment of what you have after an inspection in hand and, if it is indeed worth something, can write you up a formal appraisal, usually for a fee.

If you have any questions about zithers please check the following sites:
http://www.fretlesszithers.com/ or
http://www.fretlesszithers.net/
Between the two of them, they have it all covered for any zither-like instrument.

Antique Musical Instruments - Stella mandolin

Expert: Jim Garber - 7/10/2009

Question
I have an old Stella mandolin that my grandfather bought for my father in the sixties at a yard sale.  It is still playable and has a decent sound.  It had a small piece broken out of the bowel near the neck that my grandfather repaired.  I was just wondering if you could give me any information about it's age and value.

Answer
Hi Ryan:
Stella instruments were made by the Oscar Schmidt Company of New Jersey. Yours was probably made in the teens to 1920s of the last century. These were generally low- to kid-grade instruments and yours is probably worth at most $200 if it were in excellent condition. I am not sure what the part that your grandfather repaired was or if he repaired it well or not bit I would think that might take a something off the value. My main concern would be if that repair affected the playability or structural integrity of the mandolin.

frankly, the real value of this is to yourself, that you have something that your grandfather owned, treasured and made music on. Enjoy it!

Oh, and most of all if you get strings make sure that they are light gauge or even lighter than that. For most old bowlback mandolins I recommend GHS A240 ultralight gauge. In the US they are available from juststrings.com.

Best
Jim
