Antique Musical Instruments/Conn 15A Cornet

Question
Hi Scott,
I haven't played since Jr. High, (50 yrs. ago) but thought I'd give relearning at try.  Bought a Conn 15A, serial #C06356 off eBay and have struggled with the sticky valves.  I oil at the beginning of each practice session, but by the time I finish, they're sluggish again.  I'm looking to replace the springs or get a kit to rebuild the valves, but can't seem to find one.  The springs in there now are conical.  Are these the original or replacement?  Your help is appreciated.  Thanks much.
Alfred

Answer
Alfred.

Changing the springs is a shot in the dark, not unlike saying, "My car isn't running well, I think I need to change the wheel rims."  Springs might be the problem, but there so many other possibilities, other possibilities that are more probable.

Since oiling the valve works for a short while it doesn't really sound like it is springs.  It sound more like it is dirty or corroded.

I would first suggest giving this ol' girl a bath, use dish soap, like Dawn. If you have a soft plastic brush, use that in the valve casings.  While you are cleaning the pistons, check them for wear.

If cleaning it doesn't help, I would suggest a trip to the local repairman.  An old cornet off of eBay is likely not in the best working condition, and if it is a matter of more than cleaning, the repairman will be better able to track down the problem.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
