Question

America Standard HG
Baritone Horn, labeled American Standard High Grade, serial # 9802.  Silver-plated brass.  How old might this instrument be?
The horn is smaller than I have had before.  I understand it may be a student model.  What would you suggest about this?
Thank you for the opportunity to ask these questions.

Answer
The horn dates to the late 1920s.  American Standard was - in a sense - a student model; but not like today.  The student models of that era lacked some of the fancy detailing, and features of the professional models, but were solid playing instruments.

The baritones and euphoniums of that era tended to be smaller.  The big euphoniums of today would have probably been called Bb basses back then.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
