QUESTION: I found this Baritone on EBay & looks not bad for it's age(don't really know it's age or model #) but would like to bid on it. comes w/ mouthpiece & case... Have 1 day to go & so far is going for $86. What do you think should be my top bid & what "s your opinion on the Collegeate. Looks like 1 I played in high school 45 yrs ago. Try to hurry w/ your answer so I can bid on it   Thanks

ANSWER: Collegiates were student level instruments, but probably better than the average student model.

QUESTION: Now I need to get your opinion on a good mouthpiece for this vintage (front facing bell), Holton Collegiate... Can you recommend where to begin for a perfect mouthpiece?  Should I stick w/ a Holton mouthpiece? Oh by the way...I won this horn for $182

Answer
If the silver is basically intact on the Holton mouthpiece, I think I'd recommend starting with it.  If nothing else, it should be matched to the characteristics of the horn. Mouthpieces are a personal thing and no one mouthpiece is going to satisfy every one.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
