Question

Cornet - redone 01-18-
I have an old cornet made by Standard Band Instrument Co. 62 Sudbury St. Boston. It has no serial number, just 1, 2, 3 on the valves. How old might it be?

Answer
The Standard Band Instrument Company was started in 1884 by Thompson & Odell as the Brasswind branch using stock and equipment previously owned by Quinby.

Their publishing business was bought out by Fischer in 1900, and the instrument production was bought out by Vega in 1909.

If it has cork in the top of the top valve caps it is probably in the 1880s.  Otherwise, it probably dates from the 20th century.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
