Question
My great uncle has a bugle his father supposedly brought back from France after WW1. It has the following engraved in it:

Maison Couturier 1812
Pelisson, Guinot & Blanchon (it looks like blanchii but it was hard to read.)
Lyons-Paris
F. ESPAGNET
214 Rue St Catherine
Bordeaux

Can you tell me anything about this Bugle.  He just turned 90 and I would like to get him some info on it.  Thanks a bunch

Answer
The Couturier company was founded in 1812 by Jacques pere in Lyon

In 1836, he partnered with DuBois as DuBois & Couturier

In 1875, Pelison Freres & Cie succeeded Couturier

In 1905, the company became Pelisson, Guinot & Blanchon

In 1931 Gaillard, Martel & Loiselet; Lyon-Paris succeeded Pelisson

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
