Question
I have a York trombone silver in color stamped with York Grand Rapids Michigan USA on the bell.  Serial number 118101 under that the number 146.  It has a weight on the top with the conn symble was that added later?  Can you tell me about what year this was made and why the conn weight? Thanks

Answer
It was made in approximately 1938.  The counterweight certainly isn't original to the horn.  Counterweights started off as after-market items.  The idea is that the horn isn't balanced, i.e. the slide is heavier than the bell section.  So, the weight is to make it more balanced.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
